Château Canon Chaigneau Lalande de Pomerol 2019

Interesting background on the wine and vineyard. Since 1961 the vineyard was owned by the Marin family. The children inherited the vineyard from their parents in the late sixties and Louis Marin & his two sisters, Elisabeth & Suzanne managed the vineyard. On approaching retirement with no one in the family able to continue overseeing the property they decided to sell in 2019.

Romik Arconian stepped up as a potential buyer. He was born in the UK but finished his business degree in Paris and decided to stay, setting up a wine distribution business, which he sold in 2017. He began the search for a vineyard to buy.  He discovered and fell in love with, Canon Chaigneau, it was a little over his budget, so he got a few investors together, which proved difficult as one or two pulled out during Covid, so eventually the original owners agreed to stay as minority stakeholders and the sale was agreed.  The Chateau still requires a little modernisation, but Romik is a firm believer in the old-fashioned way of making wines and wines that express the vineyards they come from. The wines are fresh tasting, fruit forward, not overly oaked with great aging potential.

Little known to most, Thierry Garnaud, the famous cellar master from Cheval Blanc has also been making the wine at Canon Chaigneau since 1995. He was at Cheval Blanc from 1988 to 2018 and produced many legendary vintages rated 100 out of 100 such as the 1990, 1998, 2000, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2015 & 2016. He now produces wines in Canon Chaigneau with the same passion and approach as when he worked in Cheval Blanc.

Medium/full-bodied, ripe, round, lusciously textured dark cherries, black plums, liquorice and chocolate are all over the place, in the nose and on the palate, which finishes with more ripe fruits & cocoa. Soft and silky, fresh and fruity, this is already easy and great to drink.
