Reserva Port is a step up from Ruby Port, offering a deeper colour and more complexity, it can be referred to as "premium ruby" and in the past was often called "vintage character".
To be named a Reserve or Reserva port, the wines must be sampled and certified by the region's Camara de Provadores tasting panel.
The Van Zeller Reserva is aged in small wooden port casks and small steel vats for over 3 years, aging in wood allows for slight oxidation and aging in steel vats retains the wines freshness. This combination produces a Reserva port with great structure, rich blackberry fruit with hints of spice and cedar, in the mouth intense black fruit flavours dominate with a twist of chocolate and a smooth finish.
