Godello is one Spain’s indigenous grape varietals. Just a few decades ago, it had virtually disappeared from Spain. But a concerted effort from a small number of growers not only saved godella but also inspired wine makers in the north west of Spain to see what they could do with it and the results have been exceptionally promising.
In the region of Bierzo there are many old vineyards, and many of the farmers of these vines have unearthed many stones marked with Celtic runes. In honour of this Celtic connection, José labels his Vaya wines with letters from the Celtic alphabet.
Vaya is a Spanish exclamation that roughly translates as “wow”, and that is exactly what you'll think after drinking this wine!
The nose is fragrant displaying aromas of ripe white-fleshed fruit — crushed yellow apple and pear — mingled with notes of white flowers and spice. On the palate, this wine is delicate and silky with an underlying minerality. The finish lasts just long enough to call you back for your next sip.
Ideal with fish, shellfish, chicken or as an aperitif.less
