O YES……another election.

Well its that time again…..the preamble to a general election. Below is a poster I came across on the Cork/Dungarvan road before the announcement of the election, comments much appreciated.

As March approaches you will hear all sorts of political speak on TV and in newspapers. To help you figure out what our political class are really saying I’ve explained some terms you will hear and some wines to counteract the barrage.

As George Bernard Shaw once quoted “He knows nothing, he thinks he knows everything, that clearly points to a political career”.

Mudslinging – Often nasty or overly personal campaigning. Candidates who accuse their opponents of mudslinging, when in reality they just don’t like what’s been said about them and hope to minimise its impact.

Our Recommendation

Try a good honest wine of character and value like the Pelan Bellevue  from Bordeaux.

Sound Bites: Catchy phrases that candidates use to sum up their positions, attack their rivals–and increase their chances of getting on TV news shows.

Our Recommendation

A no nonsense big hitter try the Monile Ripasso from Italy.

Spin: Sometimes candidates say things they regret, or things happen that make them look stupid which recently has been happening on a regular basis. That’s where Spin comes in: Politican’s assistants or other officials will seek out the press  and “interpret” the event in question in as positive a light as possible. Excellent spinners are called spin doctors.

 Our Recommendation

This wine needs no spin, it is what it is, a genuine classic La Fauconnerie from St Emilion in Bordeaux.
